Central Romana Colonos receive highest every payment for cane
Central Romana Corporation, Ltd. announced that it has paid a sum of RD $2,367,288,376 pesos to its sugar settlers or colonos, for having supplied cane to the La Romana sugar mill during the 2020-2021 harvest.
This amount corresponds to the highest figure per short ton payment that the company has made in its entire history. The link between the Ingenio Central Romana and the estates of its sugar colonos dates back more than a century.
"The relationship with our colonos continues to be strengthened based on the work and good practices that the agricultural sector deserves, seeking compliance with sustainable policies and actions that certify quality under international regulations and standards," the company stated in a statement, also referring to the Proterra recertification granted to Central Romana for the fourth consecutive year, after completing an exhaustive face-to-face audit for five days, during which the auditors toured the mill's facilities in the industrial zone, the sugarcane fields, the communities in the bateyes and also the farms of the colonos.
At the end of the harvest last June, the company announced that it produced 396,288 short tons of sugar after grinding more than 3,358,000 short tons of cane. The company also reported that it produced more than 162,000 short tons of refined sugar and some 21 million gallons of molasses in the 197 days of the sugar harvest.
